Abby Gives – Dominica 2024

SeeSoar Kids and The Leaders Readers Network Donate 2500+ Diverse Books to Dominica

As a small, minority woman-owned business, giving back to our community is core to who we are at SeeSoar Kids. Our founder, originally from Dominica, understands the transformative power of education and prioritizes ways to give back to her homeland through our “Abby Gives” program.

This January, we partnered with The Leaders Readers Network – a nonprofit, dedicated to equitable education and early childhood literacy.

Together, we donated 500 copies of Abby Invents books and over 2000 multicultural children’s books to primary schools in Dominica.

We also spearheaded a partnership with the Roseau Public Library to facilitate distribution of classroom libraries around the island.

Over two days, we visited five schools – two in the Roseau Valley and three in Dominica’s indigenous Kalinago territory. Specifically, we visited Trafalgar, Wotten Waven, Atkinson, Salybia, and Sineku Primary Schools. Throughout our visits, we had the pleasure of engaging with several educators, principals, and read Abby Invents Unbreakable Crayons to over 300 future inventors in grades K-6. 

In the world of children's literature, representation matters, and we were especially thrilled to read "If Dominican Were a Color" by Sili Recio. Seeing kids’ faces light up by the word ‘Dominican’ on a book cover was a powerful reminder of the importance of seeing ourselves reflected in the stories we read. Another gem that resonated deeply with students in Grades 4-6 was "Rumple Buttercup" by Matthew Gubler – a delightful tale encouraging children to embrace their uniqueness because it's those very differences that make them extraordinary.

It was a joy to experience the unique culture at each school and admire the vibrant uniforms while sharing hugs with the students. Whether nestled among scenic mountains in Trafalgar and Wotten Waven, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at Atkinson and Salybia, or receiving warm hospitality and gifts of coconuts, fresh coconut water, handwoven baskets, and homemade traditional Kalinago treats at Sineku, every moment of our visit was a testament to the beauty and impact of our service trip.
